Creative writing for teens: revisiting happy memories

When teens take time to write about happy memories, it can boost their mood, ease stress, and help them feel more hopeful about what’s ahead. This fun creative writing practice – paired with our bonus downloadable activity sheet – makes it easy to get started.

WHY POSITIVE MEMORIES MATTER

If you’ve ever reminisced about good times, you might have felt as though you were back there, experiencing the excitement, amusement, and happiness of the original event all over again.

Studies have shown that recalling positive memories can interrupt negative thoughts and relieve stress and anxiety. It can also help people feel good about the future if they recall moments when things went well.

HOW WRITING SUPPORTS TEEN WELLBEING

In one study, published in the Journal of Happiness Studies, participants who reminisced about positive events felt happier than those who didn’t. They also reported higher self-esteem. Another study, published in the science magazine Nature, found that people who recollected positive memories had fewer negative thoughts.

CREATIVE WAYS TO RECALL GOOD TIMES

While it’s often helpful to talk, journal, and write about life’s more challenging moments, doing these same activities while focusing on happy events can brighten up your day. Try some of the creative-writing ideas with the bonus writing activity below and notice how you feel afterwards.
