The desire to control things can be strong, especially in uncertain times. Discover how to take a step back, manage your emotions, and find peace in letting go.
How to cope when things feel out of control
KNOW YOURSELF
Being aware of how you work is key. Check in on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and identify things that make you want to take charge.
SEEK UNDERSTANDING
If a friend or family member is acting in a controlling way, consider what might be behind their need to do that. Remember their behaviour is about them, not you.
TAKE A BREATH
Use breathing techniques to help you regulate your anxiety about the things that are out of your control. Deep, paced breaths in and out will help your nervous system to calm and regulate itself (TIPP skills for managing stress).
LET IT GO
Accept that you can’t control others’ actions. You really only have control over yourself and your reactions.
