Tips for teens balancing leadership & friendship

Taking charge is often a rewarding experience, but too much responsibility can become a burden. Here’s how to manage the high and lows of leadership.

Finding a way to share responsibilities – and your feelings – might make being a leader more fun and less lonely. Here are six suggestions to make the experience a little easier:

1 EMBRACE OTHERS’ OPINIONS

You don’t always have to be the sole decision-maker. Spread the responsibility by involving others and asking for their opinions. By considering their thoughts, you’re making sure everyone feels valued and comfortable with plans.

2 SHARE SMALL TASKS WITH THE GROUP

Ask if anyone would be willing to message around with options for dates or times when you’re planning a get-together outside of school.

3 TALK ABOUT HOW YOU’RE FEELING

You don’t have to carry the weight on your own. Confide in friends when you’re feeling concerned and ask for advice. Sharing your worries allows others to understand your perspective

4 SET BOUNDARIES THAT PROTECT YOUR ENERGY

Though it might feel awkward initially, remember that protecting your personal space and wellbeing is healthy and shows how much you value your friendship. It’s OK to say no to plans sometimes or to point out that you need some time to yourself.

5 TAKE BREAKS FROM BEING IN CHARGE

Sometimes, it’s worth retreating from the responsibility for a while. There’s no pressure to continue being the leader. Group dynamics are fluid and can change more easily than you might think. Perhaps somebody will step into your shoes and take on the role instead.

6 CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF

It’s easy to forget to take care of yourself when you’re busy looking out for others. Schedule some time to help you unwind and recharge. Perhaps watch a movie, practise some yoga (see page 42), curl up with a book, or have a dedicated day for some pampering.
